Kade Mount on his way up Haleakala on 3-20-2011. Still smiling at 6500 feet!!
This is Kade Mount’s version of how his Run to the Sun 8 hour 30 min personal record attempt went on 3-20-11. In his own words.
Aloha RN2THSN!! 830!!! The run was going incredibly smooth and with that came great confidence of reaching the goal run of 8hr30min.However the feeling came to an abrupt halt at mile 12. With the sensation of my left kneecap being put in a vice grip followed by intense pain in my upper left groin that shot through to the outer hip socket. My confidence was now replaced with WTF.Keep in mind I still had 8000ft to cover over 24 miles. My good friend LiAnne would be meeting me at mile 20-22 so I new, I had to be there. I would have a walk break going up phueloliki which is a little steep to say the least; someday I’ll run up it! If LiAnne had be there when the WTF happened I probably would get in the car and PAU. When I reached the top of Phueloiki then the only downhill part came and I dug my thumb in my left hip flexor and went for broke. By doing this I render that little bastard motion less and I win. That was to be very short lived. Very centralized pain would be my new friend. We would stop and stretch together when the pain begain to burn. This would help the hip flexor; but by stopping my knee would freeze up and was just plain white knuckle running for next 10 strides and then it was back to pain in the hip flexor. How many times did call it in, to many, when I checked my splits I was ahead of them by 20 -18 min. That was my new challenge to see how far I can go I with an injury and how close to my goal I could reach. There she was LiAnne telling me I look good and how proud she was. She was on time and more beautiful than ever. I’ve run with her and talk about this run for the last year and when she said you’re so close now and with that RN2THSN was again on. She drove ahead 3 miles and waited for me. Bu there it was again magnifying pain and self doubt crept right back in. When I reached her again she was running downhill in her flip-flops and we ran together up to her car. She had my special needs bag. I took of running again but her car would not start, I turned around came back and just at the time Coach Bill and Kris came driving up, perfect timing they could give her a jump and I would continue. Now that Coach Bill and very fast Kris was there with hot coffee and guava tea every3-4miles I just keep moving forward as they where my new carrot. They saw me through to 8000ft and as their car was running on plumes and so was I. eventually my body started to cave in and I was running a little side ways. My quads where cramping so bad I had to karate chop them about every 3-4 minutes to get them firing again. But there it was the summit I had finally reached the parking lot of 10000ft and started running through the lot and up the stairs to very top of the summit 10033 and that was it. All Pau for now. Mahalo Coach Bill!!! Oh Yea 8hr28min17sec
