Bill became interested in bike fit many years ago after spending hours on his TT bike training for the Hawaii Ironman and being in pain and misery because of a bad fit on his bike. That led to him eventually becoming Hawaii’s first certified Retul Bike Fitter. Now working out of his own Fit Studio on Maui he provides people with a detailed and comprehensive approach to bike fit.
Plan on showing up to your fit appointment about 10 minutes or so early. Our fits take from 2 to 3 hours to complete. The cost is $250 for the first bike and $150 for the second bike.
Along with your bike, you should plan on bringing riding clothes and your riding shoes. If you have some extra bike parts such as extra stems, saddles, or footbeds that you have or have formally used, it is sometimes useful to bring those items, although we carry an extensive line of fit related parts if they are needed.
Your fit starts with an interview where you discuss issues, goals, and factors that might affect how the fitter positions you on the bike. Then a brief physical assessment is performed along with a warmup on the bike on a trainer.
The unique technology behind Retül is the 3D motion capture system that measures you and your bike with sub-millimeter accuracy. Adhesive sticky dots are placed on the key joint locations of your body and an infrared light emitting harness is attached to each of those sticky dots. The Retül system tracks your exact body positions while you are riding (This is KEY) and collects body measurements for every pedal stroke and averages them together into a cyclist report that is generated as fast as the fitter can click save.
The fitter now uses this precise dynamic motion data from both sides of your body to see what it is doing without guessing. From there, a dialog starts of what the fitter sees and what are some areas that are not biomechanically optimized. The initial goal is to get you into a biomechanically neutral position that prevents injury, provides comfort, and increases power output. From there, fine tuning takes place to address unique issues or needs that you might have. Often, returning to a proven neutral position eliminates pain and makes you feel stronger on the bike.
Some initial adjustments are made to the bike and another set of motion recordings are taken. This repeats until both you and the fitter are satisfied with the new position. This fast, iterative, data based process is what decreases the time needed for your fit, increases objectivity, and results in a better position for you.
Now, your bike is measured in 3D to archive the setup of your new position. All the key points on the bike, such as saddle, grips, handlebar, and frame are all measured in 3D space. This position is translated from 3D into a report with simple measurements that you can use to recreate the position if you take apart your bike for travel, get a new bike, or (gulp) drive your bike into a garage and kill it.
All the data that is taken is archived at the studio for future reference and the cyclist and bike reports are exported to PDF and emailed to you after the fit. We also have your data archived for future fits, new bike setups, and swapping parts to use for comparison.
Our goal is to completely, quickly, and effectively get you into a new and better riding position so that your riding experience is the best it can be and all you want to do is ride more.
